Specialized in large-scale and complex metallurgy works on nuclear power plants, the Orys – Major Energy Projects Department has delivered a new section of EAS-ultime piping on Reactor B1 at the Saint-Laurent-des-Eaux nuclear power plant (Loir-et-Cher). This collective achievement highlights both our teams’ expertise in nuclear welding and the effectiveness of a targeted training program, all in service of the highest safety standards.

Through this achievement, Ortec and the Orys-GPE teams strengthen the Group’s position as a key industrial partner for nuclear operators, supporting the life extension of existing reactors, under the “Grand Carénage” program.

The EAS-ultime installation at Saint-Laurent B1 was carried out as part of the VD4 900 modification program. This ultimate backup circuit, designed to enhance nuclear safety in the event of a severe accident, allows the Nuclear Rapid Action Force (FARN) to intervene rapidly to ensure reactor cooling and maintain system integrity.
A similar EAS-u project was also successfully completed at Cruas Unit 1.

High-performance services for nuclear safety

Over 18 months, our teams were fully mobilized to install a new independent circuit, highly robust and compliant with the strictest safety standards.

Nearly 300 welds were performed, most classified RCCM2 and ESPN2, reflecting the demanding technical requirements. The project achieved a 98% welding compliance rate, exceeding previous benchmarks, demontrating both technical mastery and a strong collective commitment to quality.

Operational excellence built on preparation

This level of performance was made possible by a proactive skills development program, launched in early 2024. The Ortec Group implemented an enhanced training and qualification plan, including nuclear welding modules, to improve repeatability, productivity and schedule adherence, particularly during reactor outages.

This innovative approach ensures the reliability of critical operations, while delivering tangible benefits: time savings, stronger on-site coordination and more effective operational risk management.

Sustaining momentum

Orys – GPE continues work on the fabrication and installation of EAS-ultime circuits at Cruas Unit 4 and Chinon Unit 2, confirming its ability to replicate best practices and support EDF in modernizing its nuclear fleet.
