Scania electrifies Ortec Group’s hydro-cleaning trucks
Scania France has signed a contract with the Ortec Group for the electric repowering of its fleet of sewer cleaning trucks used for sustainable sanitation services. Scania France’s Power Solutions department will provide its new e-machine which will be connected to batteries and an integrated control system.
The Ortec Group is an integrator of engineering and construction solutions for a wide range of industries (energy, chemicals, aeronautics, etc.) and local authorities. It is one of France’s leading operators in the environmental sector: sanitation, cleaning and pumping of networks and structures, basin cleaning, collector maintenance, etc. The Ortec Group has a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles, including 700 high-pressure hydro-cleaning vehicles of various makes.
Since 2022, the Group has been committed to a proactive approach to decarbonizing its operations, including its fleet. Dantech, the Group’s technical innovation center, has been called upon to develop an electric version of the hydro-cleaners’ internal combustion engine.
Extending vehicle life
“Ortec was looking for alternatives that would emit less CO2 while extending the life of its vehicles” explains André Einaudi, Chairman and CEO of the Ortec Group. Sewer cleaning vehicles typically travel very few kilometers in the course of their operations. As a result, they are generally in good condition, but the engine is heavily used by the stationary operation of the high-pressure pump.
Scania Power Solutions, the industrial and marine applications division of Scania, began its transition to electric power solutions with its new e-machine several months ago.
Following an in-depth study, the Ortec Group chose Scania to retrofit its vehicles. “Our comprehensive solution is based on existing solutions for our truck business, and was a decisive factor in the final decision. The power specifications and battery design match the needs of the vehicles” explains Dick Burger, head of Scania France’s Power Solutions division. Scania is the only firm on the market to offer a turnkey solution involving an electric motor, batteries and an integrated control system designed and produced by the company itself.
Support
As part of the partnership, Scania will supply a complete electric motor kit and support Dantech in the retrofit process including prototype design, testing, certification, production launch, etc. “For Ortec, retrofitting is a good solution because the vehicles are not replaced” emphasizes Dick Burger. “In addition, the vehicles will have unrestricted access to city centers and low-emission mobility zones, with no noise and no emissions for local residents.”
The Ortec Group will also benefit from the after-sales service provided by Scania’s French network with its one hundred service outlets, along with the supply of parts, ten years’ technical assistance and Scania’s expertise in the treatment of end-of-life batteries. For Scania, this is the first large-scale deployment of e-machine.
The first retrofit kit is scheduled for delivery this summer and will be operational by the end of the year. Once the system has been validated, part of Ortec’s fleet of hydro-cleaning trucks will be progressively converted at Dantech’s site in Durtal (Maine-et-Loire). “Dantech aims to become the hub of expertise for the operation and retrofitting of vehicles from the Ortec fleet, as well as providing services to other companies” adds André Einaudi.
